About Wilson NC

Located in Wilson County, at the crossroads of I-95 and US 264, just 35 minutes east of Raleigh is Wilson, NC, a growing community of approximately 50,000.  Wilson is just an hour from the Raleigh-Durham International airport, midway between New York and Miami, and less than two hours from North Carolina’s beautiful beaches.

In its earliest days, settlers transformed a hickory grove into a small town where its citizens were offered educational, social, and business opportunities which were unique to the region.  By the mid-19th century, the development of Wilson was such that it became the County Seat.  This coincided with the railroad providing access to the port of Wilmington and the city began to prosper as a trading center.

Following the Civil War, farmers turned from planting cotton to tobacco which was perfectly suited for the sandy soil.  By early 20th century, Wilson had become the largest bright leaf tobacco market in the world.  The economy of Wilson and Wilson County today is primarily agricultural with the county’s farmland producing crops worth about $100 million per year.  The city of Wilson has 22 industries which employ over 100 individuals each.  Fortunately the cultural, social, and educational opportunities have kept pace with the city’s growth.

The citizens of Wilson take pride in their excellent schools.  Wilson County Schools rank in the 90 percentile of student achievement achieving at or above grade level.  There are six schools in grades 3 through 8 that crossed the 90% and received Schools of Excellence honors while four others performing just below the 90% received Schools of Distinction honors.
