About Raleigh NC

Raleigh, NC is both the state’s capital and the County Seat of Wake County.  Wake County was established when, in December of 1770, Joel Lane successfully petitioned the North Carolina General Assembly to create a new county from portions of Cumberland, Orange, and Johnston Counties. Raleigh officially became the new state capital and County Seat in 1792. 

Many changes occurred in Raleigh over the years in all areas.  Today Raleigh has been cited favorably on several “Top 10 Lists” such as Forbes and Money Magazine for it quality of life and business climate.  In 2008, Forbes Magazine named Raleigh No. 1 on the "Top 200 Best Places for Business and Careers."  

Raleigh is nicknamed the “City of Oaks” for its many oak trees and is one of the most populated cities within North Carolina.  Indeed, it holds the distinction of being the 15th fastest growing city in the US.  Raleigh's industrial base includes companies in the fields of electronics, electrical, telecommunications equipment, among others.  It is also a major center for high-tech, biotech research, and textile development

Situated in North Carolina’s Piedmont region on rolling terrain, Raleigh is nestled between the eastern shores of the Atlantic Coast, and the Appalachian and Smoky Mountains to the west.  It is a two-hour trip to the some of the most inviting beaches, and three-hours to the most breathtaking mountain peaks.

Onsite commercial and community centers provide easy access to shops, restaurants, schools, banking and other essential services.   Some of the more popular shopping venues in Raleigh include the North Hills Mall and Crabtree Valley Mall in the midtown area, Cameron Village inside the Beltline, Triangle Town Center in Northeast Raleigh, and Brier Creek Commons in Northwest Raleigh. 

Raleigh NC Schools

Public schools in Raleigh are operated under the supervision of the Wake County Public School System which is known for its innovative approach to maintaining a socially, economically, and racially balanced educational system.  In addition to the public schools, WCPSS also oversees nine charter schools which are administered independently of the public schools.  There are also private primary and secondary education schools within Raleigh.  Besides the universities that make up the Research Triangle, Wake Technical College is nearby as are several private colleges.
