Fuquay-Varina North Carolina

About Fuquay-Varina NC

Fuquay-Varina, NC is located in the garden spot of Wake County and is experiencing change with each passing day.  Originally settled by William Fuquay as Sippihaw, the area contained mineral springs thought to have healing powers.  In 1860 a group of investors purchased the springs from Fuquay in order to market the area and its waters.

It was at this same time that another Sippihaw resident, J.D. Ballentine, was returning home from the Civil War.  He had been receiving letters from several southern ladies who wrote to soldiers to bolster their morale.  One who had written signed her name as “Varina”.  Varina was a pseudonym for Virginia Avery who later met and married Ballentine.

In 1880, just south of the Fuquay Springs, Ballentine became the first postmaster of this new community he called Varina in his wife’s honor. They also opened a mercantile which they named Varina.  Eventually, in 1936, the two towns merged to become Fuquay-Varina

Fuquay-Varina is about 18 miles south of Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina and Wake County’s seat.  It is situated at the southeastern tip of the Triangle Area.  Initially the town’s economy was based upon the tobacco trade as well as other agricultural products.

However, the population growth and real estate development today is due primarily to the close proximity of the Research Triangle Park.  The latest population estimate is approximately 10,300, but including the urban service area it is approximately 30,000.

The climate of Fuquay-Varina is moderate and subtropical, with temperatures generally ranging from a winter-time low in the 20's to a summer time high in the upper 80's to low 90's.  The rainiest months are July and August.

Fuquay-Varina Schools
