Incorporated in 1869, Clayton, NC is a town located in Johnston County with a population of 13,842 as of 2007. Clayton is the fastest growing town in Johnston County, much of which can be attributed to the town's close proximity to the Research Triangle area and easy access to major highways such as I-40, U.S. 70, and NC 42.
Even though it has enjoyed rapid growth, it has maintained the quaint charm of a small Southern town while providing for growth for industry, small business, education, and recreation. Clayton is home to Clemmons State Educational Forest. Clemmons is located between the piedmont and coastal plain. It offers a mixture of pine and hardwood vegetation on rolling terrain which is accentuated by streams and rock outcroppings. Well marked trails offer exhibits and displays noting the ecology of this managed forest. Children are fascinated by a selection of talking trees and rocks.
As the commercial and service hub of Johnston County, Clayton is experiencing new development nearly every week. There are national chains along Highway 70, or quaint specialty and gift shops in the downtown area, and plenty of dining facilities throughout the town.

Clayton’s public schools, administered by Johnston County Schools, are a major reason the area is attracting new residents. JCS is committed to providing a high-quality education for its students and JCS schools are ranked within the top 20 percent of North Carolina school districts. The district has 36 schools, including a center for academically and intellectually talented elementary students. It also has a Middle College High School that offers students a dual enrollment in community college.
