Apex North Carolina

About Apex NC

Located in southwestern Wake County, NC, Apex is considered a satellite city to Raleigh, NC, which lies about 15 miles to the east-northeast.  Apex was originally settled in 1867 but wasn’t incorporated as a town until six years later.  The town got its name because it was the highest point along the Chatham Railroad.  The railroad station was actually situated in the heart of a pine forest and it became a primary shipping point for the forest’s products such as lumber, tar and turpentine.

The downtown area of Apex is a snapshot of its historical past.  A major streetscape project in Apex’s downtown area has recaptured the charm of a time long past and is an excellent example of a nineteenth century railroad town and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.  Shoppers will delight in the antique and specialty gift shops found downtown, as well as enjoying pleasurable dining experiences including an ice cream parlor and a fine dining bistro.

The estimated population as of the end of June 2008 was 43,390 and there are plenty of local activities to keep residents and visitors busy.  Throughout the year, The Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources sponsor events such as an Easter Egg Hunt, the PeakFest (an arts and crafts festival with live entertainment) held the first Saturday in May, a 4th of July Parade of Wheels (no motorized vehicles allowed), a Halloween Carnival, the Turkey Trot 5K Run in November, and a Basketball Ham Toss in December.

Apex, NC’s motto is "The Peak of Good Living".  In 1994, Business North Carolina magazine named it the #1 Small Town in economic vitality.  It was also recently named the best place to live in North Carolina by Money Magazine
